FREIGHT FORWARDING FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Export–Import Shipping

Find answers about freight forwarding, documents, costs, customs clearance, and shipping processes. For a tailored estimate, Kemasindo’s team will review your cargo details and route.

What is a freight forwarder?
A freight forwarder is a company that manages the movement of goods from origin to destination by coordinating carriers, documentation, customs clearance, storage, and inland transportation as required.
When should I use air freight or ocean freight?
Air freight is suitable for high-value, urgent, or time-sensitive cargo. Ocean freight is generally more economical for larger volumes and flexible schedules. The final decision should consider weight, dimensions, urgency, cargo characteristics, and route.
What is the difference between FCL and LCL?
FCL means one container is used by a single shipper, while LCL combines shipments from multiple shippers in one container. FCL provides greater control for suitable volumes, whereas LCL can be efficient when the cargo does not fill an entire container.
What documents are typically required for exports?
Common documents include a commercial invoice, packing list, customs declaration, transport document, and any permits or certificates required for the commodity and destination country. Requirements may vary by product.
What documents are required to import goods into Indonesia?
Documents dasar biasanya mencakup invoice, packing list, bill of lading atau airway bill, serta data perizinan importir. Komoditas tertentu dapat memerlukan izin teknis, laporan surveyor, atau dokumen pendukung lain.
What is the purpose of an HS Code?
An HS Code classifies goods in international trade. The classification affects import duties, taxes, restrictions, and documentation requirements, so it must accurately reflect the actual characteristics of the goods.
What costs are included in freight forwarding?
Costs dapat mencakup freight, origin charge, destination charge, customs handling, trucking, storage, insurance, dan surcharge tertentu. Quotation perlu dibaca bersama ruang lingkup layanan, asumsi berat atau volume, serta masa berlaku tarif.
Why is air freight chargeable weight different from actual weight?
Air freight compares actual weight with volumetric weight. The higher value is generally used as the chargeable weight because aircraft space is a major cost factor.
Does the quotation include import duties and taxes?
Not always. Freight charges may be quoted separately from estimated duties and taxes. Ensure the written scope clearly covers customs, duties, taxes, storage, demurrage, detention, and inspection charges.
How long does international shipping take?
Transit time depends on the route, mode, carrier schedule, transshipment, weather, and customs procedures. Estimates should be calculated from cargo readiness to final delivery—not only the main transportation time.
Can Kemasindo handle customs clearance and trucking?
Yes. As a licensed PPJK customs broker, Kemasindo provides customs clearance and can coordinate inland trucking to support door-to-door solutions.
How are dangerous goods or temperature-controlled cargo handled?
Special cargo requires a review of classification, packaging, labels, documents, carrier acceptance, and handling procedures. Cargo details should be provided early so feasibility and routing can be verified.
How can I request an accurate quotation?
Provide the cargo type, HS Code if available, number of packages, weight, dimensions, origin and destination addresses, Incoterms, target departure date, and special requirements. Complete information helps our team prepare relevant and transparent options.
